about
Sleeping Heavy and Well was recorded as part of The Unconscious Echo but previously unreleased.
Lyrics are by the late Emily Smalls, from her poem “Sharp//Soft”.
I lived with Emily at the Scowling House in North Portland. In the spring of 2015, Emily, Bryan May, and I organized an event at Annares to release the first Cinder Well EP, Emily’s poetry zine, and Bryan’s photo zine.
Emily asked me to collaborate on a piece - to play something on guitar for her to read poetry over. The event was sweet, lots of friends were there, Emily’s poetry slayed everyone. But we never got around to performing something together. After her death I have never stopped feeling compelled to put Emily’s words to music.
Emily was a hilarious and amazing person, an incredible poet, a real blaze of light in this world.
Tell your friends you love them.
